It’s uncanny how this post I wrote four years ago still rings true today–especially the combination of the anniversary of 9/11/2001 and an angry hurricane (last time it was Hurricane Sandy) . . .
Life is full of adverse situations; many are traumatic. In such moments, we hardly think at all. We either rise or we fall. It’s been my experience, though, that the majority of us rise. We find strength in ourselves we never knew existed, even if it means blindly functioning while our minds go into auto-pilot and help us make it through a difficult situation.
When sad or difficult anniversaries approach each year, though, we are challenged once again. We wonder as the dates approach, will we rise in the face of those memories or will we fall? Strangely, it seems that our resolve can often weaken through the years. I know mine has on many an occasion.
It surprised me, then, that my own words might comfort me today. I hope they help you, too.
